Hard well water and your plants

Most of us out here water from a well — and most north metro wells pull the same thing: hard, alkaline water. It grows people just fine. Plants have opinions.

What’s actually in the water

Across most of Minnesota, groundwater is what chemists call calcium-magnesium bicarbonate water. The DNR’s statewide surveys put hardness at generally more than 200 mg/L — firmly “hard” on anyone’s scale — and the bicarbonate part is the piece that matters to plants. Bicarbonates act like dissolved limestone: every gallon carries a little alkalinity, and alkalinity pushes soil pH up.

Why pots feel it first

A garden bed is a huge buffer; a 12-inch pot is not. Water a container with alkaline well water all summer and the potting mix quietly climbs from the mid-6s toward 7.5. Above about 7, iron locks up where roots can’t take it — and you get the classic late-summer look: newest leaves gone pale yellow with green veins, worst on petunias, calibrachoa and million bells. That’s not a watering mistake and not a feeding mistake. It’s chemistry. (Our yellow leaves guide shows the pattern to look for.)

The water softener trap

If your house has a softener, the softened taps are the one water source that’s genuinely bad for plants. Softeners swap calcium for sodium, and sodium builds up in soil in a way plants hate. Use an outside spigot that bypasses the softener — most systems have one — and never water houseplants from a softened tap all winter.

What actually helps

A rain barrel beats everything. Rain is naturally soft and slightly acidic — it’s the water plants are built for, and one barrel covers a lot of container watering. Feed with an acid-forming fertilizer — the label will say so — which leans against the drift instead of adding to it. For a few fussy pots, gardeners acidify small batches: University of Minnesota Extension points organic growers to citric acid for this job. Test before you dose — a cheap pack of pH strips tells you more than any rule of thumb, because wells a mile apart can differ.

In beds, work with it rather than against it. Elemental sulfur lowers pH slowly and modestly; chasing a big swing every year is a losing fight. The winning move is plant choice — most of what we grow shrugs at a 7 — and saving the true acid-lovers (blueberries, azaleas) for containers where you control the water.
